Es besteht aus dem schlossartigen Hauptgeb\u00e4ude aus dem Jahr 1898 und einem skulpturalen Erweiterungsbau aus Beton von 2016. Zugegeben, beim Anblick des historistischen Baus von Gustav Gull denkt niemand an einen Sichtbetonpionier. Tats\u00e4chlich aber kam hier das damals neuartige Baumaterial zu seinem ersten grossen Auftritt im Kanton Z\u00fcrich \u2013 genauer gesagt in der Gew\u00f6lbedecke der S\u00e4ulenhalle, die heute die Dauerausstellung \u00abGeschichte der Schweiz\u00bb beherbergt. Da sich damals nackiger Beton jedoch nicht ziemte, wurde er kurzerhand zugepflastert. Bis zum Lockdown, als meine morgendlichen Spazierg\u00e4nge zum Platzspitzpark zu einem festen (\u00dcberlebungs-)Ritual wurden. Ich setzte mich auf einen Steg, lauschte dem sanften Fluss der Limmat und erfreute mich an der Sch\u00f6nheit der \u00fcber 250-j\u00e4hrigen Ahornbl\u00e4ttrigen Platanen, deren riesige \u00c4ste bis ins Wasser reichen. Ich freundete mich mit den Schw\u00e4nen und Enten an und vergass f\u00fcr eine halbe Stunde oder so die Welt um mich herum. Die beiden Fl\u00fcsse sind leicht zu unterscheiden. Links fliesst wild und bockig die schlammbraune Sihl, rechts die smaragdgr\u00fcne, wohlerzogene Limmat. Das ungleiche Paar liefert sich einen zuweilen erbitterten Kampf ums Territorium. Dabei schwellen die beiden Stadtfl\u00fcsse zum wilden Strom an, bevor sie sie sich schliesslich einige hundert Meter flussabw\u00e4rts zusammenraufen. Z\u00fcrich f\u00fchlt sich hier wie eine Stadt am Amazonas an. James Joyce zog es w\u00e4hrend seines Z\u00fcrcher Exils regelm\u00e4ssig hierher. Mit dem Bau des Platzspitzwehrs 1951 wurde es 1952 durch den n\u00fcchternen, aber eleganten Betonbau von Elsa Burckhardt-Blum ersetzt. Konzipiert f\u00fcr den Mittagsschwumm der werkt\u00e4tigen Bev\u00f6lkerung im Quartier, ist die Badi kostenlos, verwandelt sich nachts in eine Bar und ist entsprechend beliebt. Das war aber nicht immer so: 1988 wurde die am gegen\u00fcberliegenden Ufer verlaufende Bahnstrecke stillgelegt. Die S\u00fcdseite des Turms dient als vertikale Solaranlage. Und hier purzelt der n\u00e4chste Rekord: Die sechs Panels bilden die h\u00f6chste Solarfassade Europas. Sogar der ber\u00fcchtigte Schattenwurf, wegen dem es zu einer Volksabstimmung kam, erweist sich in den inzwischen regelm\u00e4ssig stattfindenden Hitzesommern als Vorteil.
