Ever wanted to get to know the discreet but fascinating world of Zurich’s concrete beauties residing between Kunsthaus and the lakeside promenade? Then my new city walk in collaboration with Swiss Heritage Center is just what you need.
The leafy Seefeld district – a brutalist bastion? No, of course not. But the stretch between Pfauen, Zurich Opera House and Zürichhorn park boasts a remarkably dense and diverse range of striking representative concrete buildings from the 1970s to the present day.
Our tour leads from Kantonsschule Rämibühl to the new Kunsthaus extension and Santiago Calatrava’s Stadelhofen station. We continue via the Opera House and the lakeside promenade to the spaceship-like Pyramid at The Lake and the equally impressive Haus zum Klausstud right next door. Our walk ends at Pavillon Le Corbusier, the last building completed by the überdaddy of brutalism during his lifetime.

This city walk is part of the Gem or Eyesore? exhibition at Swiss Heritage Center, Villa Patumbah. It is in German, takes place on 16 September at 2pm and lasts 2 h. Meeting point: in front of the main entrance of Kantonsschule Rämibühl. Registration required, limited number of participants, cost: CHF 20.
