DIAMONDS ARE NOT FOREVER: WELBECK CAR PARK, 1970-2019
Built by Michael Blampied & Partners for Debenhams department store just off Oxford Street in 1968-70, Welbeck has a firm place in Britain’s brutalist heritage. Its striking diamond-shaped facade, formed of pre-cast concrete panels, speaks of the bold optimism of its time as much as it speaks of today. Despite protests and plans to save at least the facade, Westminster Council in February 2019 approved plans to replace Welbeck with a luxury hotel. Demolition works began in May. Diamonds are not forever, after all.
The card captures the Sunday afternoon when Welbeck and I saw eye to eye for the last time. The September skies were smiling and everything was tinted in a sun-kissed shade of gold. Welbeck is disappearing but this moment will always remain. The edition is a heartfelt homage to Welbeck, celebrating its Brutalist beauty and offering a joyful souvenir. Welbeck forever.

Autosilo Balestra is an iconic Brutalist multi storey car park in Lugano’s financial district. Its fortress-style build and sharp zigzag lines cutting into the Sottoceneri sky may be weather-beaten, but this relict of the car age is here to stay. An ode to an unsung concrete beauty and its unknown creator.
