Rediscover Zurich's concrete icons in a fresh new way
Our folding map presents 40 pioneering concrete icons from all over the canton Zurich, spanning all styles and eras. Early works, such as the Columned Hall of the National Museum (1898), meet the classics of Zurich’s concrete modernism, such as the Freudenberg school complex and the Zur Palme high-rise. Brutalist original Triemli Tower joins contemporary béton-brut reinterpretations by Herzog & de Meuron or Barozzi Veiga.
There are also real gems of post-war site-specific-art, such as the the loop-themed brutalist playground by Ralph Bänziger and the wall reliefs at Regina department store in Dietikon. Special attention is also paid to contemporary objects that combine bold design with sustainability awareness, such as the Tanzhaus in recycled concrete. Zurich’s most filigree concrete beauty – the elegantly curved Aula Rämibühl (1971) – adorns the back in poster format.

Each object is featured with an image. Find key data – construction period, architects, location and closest tram stop in the legend section. The map on the removable cover makes for easy navigation. An introduction in German and English by HEARTBRUT founder Karin Bürki provides additional insights.

We care about our concrete heritage as much as we do about the environment. That is why our map also shines a special light on contemporary objects, such as Tanzhaus and Zollhaus, that combine bold aesthetics with recycled concrete and CO2-reducing technologies. Or, in the case of the sports facility units on the grounds of Sihlhölzli, explore cement-free types of concrete, such as rammed-earth.

For the design, we teamed up with Rebecca De Bautista and Isabella Furler from the Zurich-based graphic design studio Lugma. Printing was done in Dielsdorf.
