The distinctive folds of Masonry Hall (Maurerhalle) in Basel form one of the world’s most elegant concrete origami. If beauty is reduction, the hall’s focus on concrete folds, glass and air serves it to you straight here. The monumental modernist monument is part of a cluster of four buildings that form The School of Art & General Trade campus. Originally built as a workshop space for masonry apprentices, today it serves as a lecture hall and multi-purpose studio facility. Architect Hermann Bauer aptly refers to his 1961 oeuvre as “utilitarian poetry”.
